Boxer Joseph Parker Faces Potential Ban After Failed Anti-Doping Test

The New Zealand heavyweight returned an adverse finding during a doping test conducted on the day he faced 11th-round defeat to UK boxer Fabio Wardley.

The Bout Along with Its Stakes

Wardley together with Parker were part of an intense contest in London in late October to establish the identity of the next in line for the WBO facing undisputed world heavyweight champion Ukrainian champion Usyk.

Parker had been the leading contender to challenge the champion after putting together a remarkable six-fight winning streak, however put his shot at the title on the line during the bout and experienced a stoppage in round eleven.

Adverse Finding Plus Implications

A standard screening conducted on the boxer by the anti-doping organization the day of the match came back positive which leaves the veteran boxer with a battle to prove his innocence.

Parker's promotional company released a statement stating: "The anti-doping body notified all required parties about Parker returned an adverse finding following an anti-doping test carried out on October 25th. As the investigation continues, no further statements are forthcoming currently."

Career Background

Parker was crowned titleholder back in 2016 before he was defeated for his WBO belt by unanimous decision versus Anthony Joshua in Wales two years later.

The fighter remained an active participant in the UK since then, competing in eight bouts in total on UK territory and relocating to the Irish capital for training camps with esteemed mentor former champion Lee during this period.

Current Situation

Coached by Andy Lee, the boxer recovered from his defeat in 2022 versus Joe Joyce to achieve multiple wins which put him at the front of the line to face Oleksandr Usyk prior to he was defeated to Wardley.

Following the boxer produced a positive test when he fought Wardley, reportedly involving cocaine, an inquiry regarding the results is underway.

  • Joseph Parker tested positive for an illegal substance.
  • The examination took place by Vada on October 25th.
  • The fighter could receive disciplinary action from competition.
  • His representatives released an announcement addressing the failed examination.
  • An investigation is currently underway regarding the case.
