Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
Summers declared he would retreat from public positions after Congressional panel disclosed his repeated communications with Epstein

One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a series of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

The economist stated in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have participated, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and look forward following their progress".

The prominent academic, who previously presided over Harvard University, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released messages revealed that the official exchanged messages with Epstein until the day before his 2019 arrest for suspected sex trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the AI firm stated it understood the economist's choice to resign.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the insight he provided to the directors," the organization stated.

Political Context

This announcement arrives after the two houses of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to endorse a measure that would compel the federal prosecutors to release its documents on Epstein.

The bill will afterward move to the office of President Trump for signature. The President has said he intends to sign the measure, after modifying his position on the issue following pressure from his supporters.

Message Details

A group of Epstein-related emails made public by the House Oversight Committee days ago included numerous high-profile figures in the billionaire's previous network, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.

The communications indicated that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often trying to connect the official to notable world leaders.

Personal Response

After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, he stated he took "total ownership for my ill-advised decision to continue corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he wanted "to rebuild trust and repair connections with the persons closest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers held high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; acting as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.

He presided over the university from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his step-down from public commitments recently on this week, he said he would continue his educational duties.

Additional Consequences

Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in the capital where Summers was a prominent member, verified that Summers was no longer affiliated with the organization.

He became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which makes the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO OpenAI's head.
