At least 64 people died in a security raid against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's past.

Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials reported. More than 80 individuals were arrested.

Fierce clashes broke out when about 2,500 police forces entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho responded with gunfire, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "shocked" by the police operation, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

The informal settlements adjacent to the city's international airport is considered to be the main base of a major organised crime groups.
