The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Acquired by US Investment Giant.
A major resort island situated on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the legacy and commitment that the family owners has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment saying they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the land is built upon, featuring a substantial array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to simple iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
The acquiring firm also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
